The North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (NDSRT) is the re-branded name for the Okehampton Section of the Dartmoor Rescue Group, which several years ago separated into four autonomous Teams. The NDSRT is a voluntary organisation linked to Mountain Rescue, England and Wales. Our role exists to assist the Police and other emergency services by providing a Search and Rescue facility for missing and injured persons, 24 hrs a day, 365 days of the year.
We are a registered charity and are totally dependent on donations from the general public. It costs in excess of £12,000 per year to maintain the running of the Team, which calls for a significant amount of fundraising and effort from the members and supporters. There are many ways that you can support and help us to provide this essential service.
The North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team is based in Okehampton and consists of around 40 highly skilled volunteers from many walks of life - each bringing their own attributes and abilities that help create this highly professional organisation.
The Team is generally asked to assist after a 999 call is received by the Police or the Ambulance Service, both of whom will contact the Team's Search Managers who will then task the Team appropriately, whether it be an extended search or a simple "carry-off" of an injured person.
Over the years the Team has extended its skills and rolls. We now have a swift water capability and technical rope rescue which can be used on steep ground. Besides operating on the North Moor, we also cover more lowland areas of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, with approximately 50% of all "call-outs" being away from Dartmoor itself.
In addition, the Team provides safety cover and marshalling for local community and public events. The annual Ten Tors event, which involves some 2,400 youngsters in an expedition across Dartmoor over two days, sees all four Dartmoor Teams unite to provide safety cover and alongside the military.
