Since the beginning of the year we have responded to three incidents:

14th February 2007

To search for a missing 77 year old male who had gone missing from a farm near Honeychurch in Devon. Sadly, his body was found close to the farm where he was staying with his family.

27th February 2007

To search for a 19 year old male at Bridgerule near Holesworthy, Devon He’d been missing from his home for several hours and there was concern for his wellbeing. He returned to his home just as our team arrived at an RV with the Police.

4th March 2007

We responded to a Police call-out for a 14 year old girl who was reported to be in a swollen river near Watern Tor. A helicopter from RNAS Culdrose rescued the girl from the river and transported her to Derriford hospital in Plymouth. Tragically, she later died that evening.

We were tasked to locate and help evacuate the remaining team members. After battling their way across swollen rivers, our team met up with the Ten Tors team and aided their evacuation when the helicopter returned.

The weather that day was particularly bad torrential rain and hail, strong gusting winds and visibility down at times to 300 metres. Rain over the previous week had saturated the Moor and the rain during Sunday had run straight into the rivers causing them to rise to full spate within a very short time.

This incident has caused great sadness to all the Dartmoor Rescue Teams and our sympathies and condolences go out to the girls family.
