Dartmoor

Dartmoor is one of Britain's most beautiful and remote areas, covering some 368 square miles. It is renowned for its changeable weather conditions and without sensible precautions could catch you unaware. Even the most experienced walkers have been caught out by the weather, overtaken by darkness, injury or other scenario beyond their control.

NDSRT is here to help; but by helping yourself and by taking the following simple steps, should ensure you stay safe and enjoy Dartmoor.

Be Prepared

  1. Plan your route carefully and tell family and friends of your intentions. You can download the NDSART route card to make your plans easier.
  2. Remember to tell someone when you return!
  3. When you plan your route always have a backup 'escape route' off of the moor just in case something does go wrong.
  4. Never be embarrassed to cut your route short. If the weather turns against you or a member in your party becomes unwell then turn back to safety.
  5. Make sure you check the weather BEFORE you set out. It may be sunny where you are but it could be very different on the moor.
  6. Mobile phone coverage is patchy at the best of times: Don't rely on your mobile phone!
  7. If you do get into difficulties, phone for help. Dial 999 and STAY WHERE YOU ARE. It is much more difficult to find someone who is moving around.
  8. Check the times of firing is you plan to walk through a range. MOD Firing Times HERE .

Be Prepared

Taking the right Equipment with every-time you will allow you to enjoy Dartmoor and above all stay safe.

  • A decent rucksack capable of carrying all your equipment.
  • Emergency food in addition to any planned meals - glucose sweets, biscuits, nuts etc.
  • Map plus a spare and compass - and know how to use them.
  • Emergency whistle - six blasts every minute is the recognised distress signal.
  • A working torch with spare bulb. Powerful enough to signal with to help us find you.
  • Small first aid kit - plasters + small bandages.
  • Survival bag - as big as you are and bright orange colour.
  • Dry spare clothing in a plastic bag (and put your mobile phone in one too).
  • Good boots are a must. These should ideally be waterproof and offer good ankle support.
  • Waterproofs are also a MUST for Dartmoor!
  • Hat and Gloves.
