The North Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation linked to Mountain Rescue of England and Wales. It is one of the four sections that comprise the Dartmoor Rescue Group.
The role of the NDSRT is to provide a search and rescue facility for missing and injured persons. Like other emergency organisations the Team is usually called out in response to a 999 call to the police. In our area it is the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary who initiate the search and task the Team. The Team is on constant stand-by for deployment 24 hours a day, 365 day of the year.
Based in Okehampton on the northern boundary of the Dartmoor National Park, the NDSRT, as its name implies, provides search and rescue facilities for the northern part of Dartmoor and surrounding areas. The three other Teams, Ashburton, Plymouth and Tavistock cover the east, south west and surrounding areas of the moor
In recent years the NDSRT has extended its duties and skills to lowland areas across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. Approximately 50% of all call-outs are away from Dartmoor.
In addition, the Team also provides safety cover and marshalling for local community and public events, in particular the annual Ten Tors which involves 400 teams of youngsters in an expedition across the moor over two days. The Team also assists with the provision of training for Ten Tors managers.
