How do people become members?

Members of the Team come from all walks of life, most having full-time jobs. Although linked to the Mountain Rescue organisation, members do not necessarily have to be mountaineers or possess climbing skills however some members are skilled in those areas and are able to train other members wishing to expand their skills and experience.

Anyone who has an interest in Dartmoor, a desire to help others and the ability to work as a part of the Team may apply to become a member. It is an advantage to have a level of fitness sufficient to cope with extended fell walking and basic navigation skills.

Full training is given to training members in all aspects of search and rescue. This includes navigation, communications, search techniques, first aid, casualty handling. And working with other rescue agencies such as the Police and MOD requires us to have training in helicopter deployment and evacuation.

Trainee members are required to complete a comprehensive training programme. This usually takes between 6 and twelve months.

Full members continue to train to maintain their skills and abilities. Training takes place one evening every week.
